Everybody talks about the excitement of moving to a small town…but nobody really talks about what happens AFTER the moving truck leaves.
The boxes are stacked in the garage. You don’t know where anything is yet. You’re trying to figure out where the locals actually go, which restaurants are worth it, and how people meet each other. The hard truth is that first 90 days after moving to a small town can either make you fall in love with the place or make you feel completely disconnected from it. That’s one of the biggest things nobody is prepared for when they move here.
If you’re new here, I’m Leslie Bennett, with Bennett Real Estate Company, based right in the heart of Thomasville. With years of experience helping people from across the country relocate to South Georgia, I give you straightforward, honest guidance to make the process smooth, informed, and a whole lot less overwhelming.
And today…we’re talking about what REAL life looks like during your first 90 days after moving to a small town like Thomasville Georgia.
Let’s get right into it!
Expectation Vs. Reality

The first thing that usually happens when people move to a small town…they realize they don’t automatically feel “plugged in” overnight.
Which I think a lot of people secretly expect that they will. People imagine moving somewhere smaller means instant community.
A place where everybody knows your name, where the invitations immediately come flying in, and where you magically have a whole friend group in two weeks.
And while, yes, sometimes that DOES happen. Unfortunately, most of the time? It takes a little intention. Small towns can be incredibly welcoming, but relationships here tend to grow more naturally and more slowly. People want to know WHO you are. Not just what you do That’s honestly one of the things people end up loving most about living here.
The First 30 Days

This period of time after moving is usually all about getting settled. This is when you figure out your routines and the minutia of every day living in your location. It’s when you learn which roads to take to save time and where everything is downtown. You’re testing restaurants to find your favorite and discovering your new go-to coffee order somewhere. This is when you learn the rhythm of the town.
During that first month, don’t isolate yourself. It’s easy to get bogged down in figuring out your new life, but if you don’t take the time to get to know the people as well, then that’s the biggest mistake you can make. It’s why I’m always urging newcomers to town to break out of their self-isolation! This is especially important if you moved from a larger city where life felt anonymous.
In small towns, community doesn’t usually come from apps. It comes from physically showing up. And I know that sounds simple, but it does matter.
Join the YMCA, visit a church, go downtown, walk Broad Street, go to local events, sit outside somewhere, and talk to people. If you do this, you WILL meet people. And the more visible you are in the community…the faster the town starts feeling like home.
One thing I LOVE about Thomasville specifically is that there are constantly things happening here. There’s always some kind of event downtown. Live music, Farmer’s markets, Holiday events, Food events, Charity events, Art walks, and Local festivals. That’s one of the easiest ways to start meeting people naturally. You see the same people enough and eventually those quick little conversations turn into relationships.
Rent or Buy

Now let’s talk about renting versus buying…Because the first 90 days can look a little different depending on where you are in the process. If you’re renting first…that’s completely okay. I think sometimes people feel weirdly pressured to buy immediately after relocating somewhere new, but you do NOT have to rush. When you rent first it can help you figure out what side of town you like, how close you want to be to downtown, whether you want acreage or neighborhoods, whether you want walkability or privacy, and whether you want more land or less maintenance. That can be really smart because living somewhere and visiting somewhere are two completely different things.
Now if you ARE buying right away…the biggest thing I always tell people is to give yourself grace. You are not going to know everything immediately and that’s okay. You don’t have to become a local overnight. That comes with time.
This is also where having the RIGHT real estate team matters so much. Because for my team and me…this goes way beyond opening doors to houses. We help people figure out LIFE here. A lot of our clients still text us long after closing. Asking where to get something repaired, Where to eat dinner, Who cuts hair, What church people recommend, and Where the best Christmas events are. We genuinely love helping with that stuff because we understand that moving somewhere new can feel overwhelming, especially if you don’t know anybody yet.
Final Takeaways
You do NOT have to have every single thing figured out before moving to a small town. You just need to be willing to participate in the community once you get here. That’s the difference. The people who end up LOVING small town life are usually the people who actually engage with it. They become part of the rhythm of the town instead of sitting on the outside waiting for the town to come to them.
And before they know it…the cashier knows their name. They’re waving at people downtown. They’ve got a favorite restaurant table. They know when the downtown events happen without checking online. And suddenly, it doesn’t feel like they “moved” there anymore.
It just feels like home.
How do I actually find out what’s going on around town?
The Discover Thomasville website does a really good job posting local happenings and community events online.
Facebook is honestly HUGE in small towns. A lot of local businesses, event organizers, churches, nonprofits, and community groups post EVERYTHING on Facebook first. And if you’re looking for the best Facebook group to join to stay up to date on all the local going ons, then join my group, Totally Thomasville! We love helping newcomers get connected in the community.
One of the BEST ways?
Just ask locals. People here LOVE giving recommendations.
What restaurants should I eat at in Thomasville, GA?
The number one restaurant without hesitation is Jonah’s Fish & Grits. It’s one of those places that feels very Thomasville. It’s laid back, local, southern, and consistently good.
The second is Liam’s Restaurant. It’s a completely different atmosphere. A little more upscale with amazing food that makes for a great date night place.
Third would be George & Louie’s. That place has been a staple forever.
And last but not least, Q Cafe. This is a great local spot for Brunch lovers. It’s homey atmosphere and good southern food will put you at ease and make you feel like you belong.
How long should I rent before buying a home when relocating?
Great question! A lot of people rent for 6 months up to year in order to learn the area before deciding where to put down roots.
