Let’s start with the most important lesson. You need to learn to wave. I’m serious. In bigger cities, people don’t always acknowledge each other. In Thomasville, people wave. Neighbors wave. People driving past wave. People walking downtown wave. Sometimes people wave and you have absolutely no idea who they are. Your job is simple.

Wave back. Don’t overthink it. Just wave.

Downtown

If you’ve never driven through downtown Thomasville before, those brick streets can be a little shocking. The first time most people drive over them, they immediately think something is wrong with their vehicle. Nothing is wrong. That’s just downtown. And before long, you’ll find yourself slowing down, enjoying the scenery, and appreciating one of the things that makes Thomasville feel unique.

Another important survival tip. If someone tells you to meet them “under the Big Oak,” they don’t mean one of the big oak trees. They mean THE Big Oak. Trust me. After you’ve lived here for a few weeks, you’ll understand. The Big Oak is basically our version of a town landmark, meeting place, photo spot, and unofficial welcome center all rolled into one.

Weather

If you’re moving from up north, summer in South Georgia is going to get your attention. The humidity is real. The temperatures are real. And stepping outside in July can sometimes feel like walking directly into a warm blanket. The good news is most people adjust. The better news is you’ll eventually learn why so many locals schedule outdoor activities early in the morning or later in the evening.

Gnats. Nobody likes them. Nobody invited them. Yet somehow they show up every year. If you’ve never experienced South Georgia gnats before, just know they’re tiny, persistent, and have an incredible ability to find your eyes at the worst possible moment. Consider them a rite of passage. If you’ve had a gnat fly directly into your face while trying to have a conversation, congratulations.

You’re officially becoming a local.

The People

Now here’s something else newcomers notice quickly. Thomasville is a relationship town. People know people. And before long, you’ll know people too. You may walk into a restaurant and see three people you’ve already met that week. You may run into your dentist at the grocery store. You may see your child’s teacher at a football game. And eventually, you’ll start doing the exact same thing everybody else does. You’ll stop and talk. One of the things people love most about Thomasville is that sense of connection.

If you’re trying to survive in Thomasville, you’re going to need to know where to eat. One thing newcomers quickly discover is that chain restaurants are not the stars of the show here. The local restaurants are. Some of the best meals in town come from places that have been serving this community for years. And if a local tells you that you need to try a certain restaurant, my advice is simple. Listen to them. They’re usually right.

Here’s another lesson you’ll learn quickly. Community events matter here. Whether it’s First Fridays, Rose Show season, holiday events, concerts downtown, or one of the many festivals throughout the year, people show up. And if you’re new in town, attending those events is one of the fastest ways to start feeling connected to the community. You don’t have to know anyone when you arrive. That’s the whole point. Before long, you’ll start seeing familiar faces everywhere you go.

Pace

And finally, here’s the biggest survival tip of all. Don’t rush. People move to Thomasville because they’re looking for a different pace of life. But sometimes they arrive and immediately try to recreate the busy lifestyle they left behind. Give yourself time. Take a walk downtown. Sit on a bench. Visit local shops. Talk to people. Go to the farmers market. Attend a community event. The magic of Thomasville isn’t something you experience in a weekend. It’s something you discover over time.
