If you’ve ever spent a summer in South Georgia, you already know… it’s hot.

For people moving here from places with dry climates, the biggest surprise usually isn’t the temperature itself—it’s the humidity. Ninety degrees in Arizona feels completely different than ninety degrees in Thomasville. Here, the air feels thick, afternoons can be intense, and by August you’ll understand why everyone seems to know where every shady parking spot in town is.

You’ll also quickly discover that your makeup doesn’t stay perfect for very long, your perfectly coiffed hair starts to frizz the minute you step outside, and after just a few minutes in the heat, you’ll wonder why you even bothered getting ready. Around here, we’ve all learned to laugh about it because it’s simply part of life in South Georgia.

Oh… and then there are the gnats. If you’ve never experienced South Georgia gnats before, just know they’re basically our unofficial summer mascot. They’ll somehow find your face no matter where you are, and every local has perfected that little wave of the hand trying to shoo them away while carrying on a conversation. It’s almost a rite of passage.

But here’s something that people who have lived here for years will tell you…

You don’t spend the whole summer hiding inside.

You simply learn how to live with the heat instead of fighting against it.

The funny thing is, once you settle into that rhythm, summer becomes one of the best seasons to enjoy everything our community has to offer. You just experience it a little differently than you might somewhere else.

We Learn To Slow Down

One of the biggest adjustments people make after moving here is realizing that not every part of the day has to be packed with activity.

You’ll notice pretty quickly that most locals aren’t out mowing the lawn at two o’clock in the afternoon.

They’re doing it first thing in the morning.

By seven or eight o’clock you’ll already hear lawn mowers running, people walking their dogs, cyclists riding through neighborhoods, and families getting outside before the sun really starts doing its thing.

Then, when the hottest part of the day rolls around, everybody naturally slows down.

That’s not being lazy.

That’s just being smart.

We’ve figured out over the years that there’s no reason to battle the Georgia sun when you can simply work around it.

The Front Porch Isn’t Just Decoration

One thing I absolutely love about homes here—and something buyers from other parts of the country always comment on—is how many houses have beautiful front porches.

Around here, they’re actually used.

Once dinner is over and the temperature starts dropping a little, people head outside with a glass of sweet tea, flip on the ceiling fan, and just sit for a while.

Neighbors wave as they walk by.

Kids ride their bikes.

You’ll hear birds instead of traffic.

Sometimes you’ll spend an hour out there and realize you’ve barely looked at your phone.

It’s one of those simple Southern traditions that sounds almost old-fashioned until you experience it yourself.

Then it quickly becomes one of your favorite parts of living here.

We Know Where Every Bit of Shade Is

There’s a reason people love our giant Live Oaks.

They’re gorgeous, of course, but they’re also nature’s air conditioning.

Take a walk through downtown Thomasville during the middle of summer and you’ll see exactly what I mean.

Standing underneath those enormous trees feels completely different than standing in direct sunlight.

The Big Oak is probably the most famous example, but honestly, you’ll find beautiful shaded streets and parks all over town.

It’s amazing how much more enjoyable a walk becomes when you’re under that canopy instead of baking in the afternoon sun.

Every South Georgia Home Needs a Pool

If there’s one thing I’ve become convinced of after living here my whole life, it’s that every South Georgia home needs some kind of swimming pool.

Now, I’m not saying it has to be a huge resort-style pool.

It can be an above-ground pool.

A plunge pool.

Even one of those stock tank pools that have become so popular.

Just something where you can jump in, cool off, and escape the heat for a little while.

On those ninety-five-degree afternoons, when the humidity feels like you’re wearing a wet blanket, having somewhere to cool off right in your own backyard is worth its weight in gold.

And if you’re house shopping with me… don’t be surprised if I point out the pool before I point out the kitchen.

Downtown Is the Perfect Place to Cool Off

Another thing locals have mastered is knowing when it’s time to step inside for a little while.

One of my favorite summer afternoons starts with a walk through downtown, popping into a few local shops, and then cooling off inside one of our restaurants or coffee shops.

Maybe it’s an iced coffee from Grassroots.

Maybe it’s a delicious ice cream from The Scoop.

Maybe it’s sitting down for lunch somewhere with great air conditioning while watching people stroll down Broad Street.

You don’t have to stay outside all day to enjoy summer.

Sometimes breaking it up with a cool drink and good conversation is exactly what makes the day enjoyable.

The Butler-Mason YMCA Water Park

If you have kids—or grandkids visiting—you’ll quickly learn why the Butler-Mason YMCA Water Park is so popular.

As soon as school lets out, that’s one of the busiest places in town.

It’s one of those places where families can spend hours together without worrying about the heat because, well… everyone’s already in the water.

The splash areas, the slides, the pool—it becomes a summer tradition for a lot of local families.

And if you’re trying to keep kids entertained during July, trust me, this place deserves to be on your list.

When It Gets Really Hot… We Leave Town

One of the best parts about living in Thomasville is that you’re close enough to take some incredible day trips.

Sometimes the perfect answer to a ninety-five-degree afternoon is simply getting in the car.

Wakulla Springs is one of my favorites.

That crystal-clear spring water stays refreshingly cool all year long, and spending the afternoon there feels like hitting the reset button.

Or head over to Wild Adventures to experience a true adrenaline rush on a roller coaster or cool off in the water park.

Other days, people head toward the Gulf.

St. George Island.

Mexico Beach.

Even Alligator Point.

They’re all close enough to enjoy without needing to plan a full vacation.

Having those kinds of places nearby is one of the hidden perks of living in South Georgia that people don’t always think about before they move here.

Summer Evenings Are The Best Part

Here’s what surprises almost everyone who’s new to the area.

The middle of the afternoon may be scorching…

But once the sun starts getting lower, everything changes.

Downtown fills back up.

Restaurant patios come alive.

Families head out for ice cream.

People start walking again.

Community events begin.

And then, of course, there’s football season.

In a lot of parts of the country, Friday night football means sweatshirts, blankets, and crisp fall air.

Here in South Georgia?

It means shorts.

Flip-flops.

Sunglasses until kickoff.

And trying to stay cool in the stands.

It’s just another reminder that our idea of fall looks a little different than it does almost anywhere else.

Instead of hiding from the heat all day, everyone simply waits for the best part of it.

Some of my favorite memories in Thomasville have happened on warm summer evenings when the town feels relaxed, people are out enjoying themselves, and there’s just this great sense of community everywhere you look.

Final Thoughts

Living in South Georgia definitely means you’ll have some hot days.

There’s no getting around that.

But after a while, you stop focusing on the heat, you accept that the gnats are going to make an appearance, and you start enjoying everything that comes with summer here.

You learn to wake up a little earlier.

You appreciate a shady porch more than you ever thought you would.

You discover your favorite downtown spot for an iced tea.

Maybe you become convinced that every backyard deserves a swimming pool.

You plan spontaneous trips to the springs or the beach.

And before long, you realize you’ve started doing exactly what every local has been doing for years.

Summer isn’t something we simply endure.

It’s a season we know how to enjoy.
