Thomasville is a charming small town in South Georgia that lives big and today I’m going to tell you 10 things that you should know before moving to Thomasville, Georgia.

Thomasville Schools

Thomasville has two public school systems— the Thomasville City school system and the Thomas County school system. Both school systems offer learning from pre-k through 12th grade and both school systems offer a wide variety of sports and recreational activities. Also both school systems offer many electives to choose from including things like music, performing arts, and even rotc. Additionally, both school systems offer advanced placement learning where the students can earn college credits while they are in high school.

Thomasville also has two private schools— Brookwood school and Thomasville Christian school. Brookwood school is an independent college prep day school that offers educational opportunities to qualified students from pre-k through 12th grade. They offer various opportunities for students in all grades to participate in the visual and performing arts and they offer a wide range of athletics to sixth to twelfth grade students. The Thomasville Christian school enrolls students in pre-k through eighth grade the curriculum is based on Becca and Bob Jones’ materials and they are focused on providing a variety of teaching methods to accommodate the various learning styles of each child.

Thomasville Healthcare

Archbold Medical Center is a four hospital three nursing home health system that has 540 patient beds and employs more than 2,500 people. They have a staff of nearly 200 qualified physician specialists. The main hospital, John D. Archbold Memorial Hospital, is located in Thomasville and has 264 beds. Our medical center is committed to using the most up-to-date technology but they also provide high quality patient focused health care. Their services include a heart and vascular center, a cancer center, imaging center, maternity center, surgical and orthopedic procedures, and they offer home health care. Their dedicated staff and exemplary facilities have earned their hospital an excellent reputation.

Downtown Thomasville

There’s no better place to be than walking around the cobblestone streets of Downtown Thomasville. It is full of countless places you’ll be happy to browse for a while. You can find just about everything you’re looking for in our downtown shops. We’ve got multiple women’s and men’s boutiques to cater to all ages and sizes. We’ve got a bookstore, a kitchen gadget store, a nostalgic toy store, and many other shops that offer everything from unique treasures and home goods to guns and rattlesnake belts. 

Let me tell you—wait until you smell the fresh bread baking from nearby Flowers Bakery. There’s nothing quite like it! There’s so much to mention that I just can’t list them all here but I promise you could spend a whole day in our downtown and not see everything. Best of all, I haven’t even mentioned downtown dining.

Dining in Thomasville

Thomasville has some truly amazing places to dine. Thomasville’s award-winning downtown is a food lover’s dream come true. Our downtown offers everything you could desire! You can enjoy locally made cheese and charcuterie boards from Sweetgrass Dairy Cheese Shop or Liam’s Restaurant. You can enjoy classic southern dishes like shrimp and grits from Jonah’s or dive into a handcrafted burger from George and Louie’s or feast on aged steaks from the Chop House. Then you can wash the day away with your choice of cocktails or a glass of wine from Farmer’s Daughter’s Vineyard and Tasting Room or Hubs and Hops. Make sure not to forget the indulgent treats that will satisfy any sweet tooth from Sweet Cacao. This is just to name a few—we have so many others. We’re talking about amazing food made local by locally owned businesses that have great atmospheres.

History and Culture in Thomasville

Thomasville is rich in history and culture. There’s always something to do! Thomasville is full of wonderful sites and landmarks like Pebble Hill Plantation, the Lapham Patterson House, the Jack Hadley Black History Museum, the Big Oak, and the Flowers Museum and more. You can even go on one of our tours like the Taste of Thomasville Food Tour and sample amazing food from local restaurants while learning the history, the culture, and architecture that makes Thomasville unique. 

Additionally, Thomasville is home to world-renowned events and festivals that feature everything from roses to planes and Christmas carols. Every April is the Thomasville Rose Show Festival— a top 20 event in the Southeast featuring flower shows, parades, music, and more. In November, we’ve got the Wildlife Arts Festival which is a premier celebration of arts and culture in the Red Hills region of Southwest Georgia and North Florida. This festival attracts sporting and wildlife enthusiasts and is sponsored by the Thomasville Center for the Arts. Last but certainly not least, We’ve got Victorian Christmas where you’ll stroll the bricks and be entertained by performers, carolers, and musicians. This festival will take you back to days of old.

Activities in Thomasville

Thomasville offers activities for the whole family. For you golf enthusiasts, we’ve got two 18-hole golf courses— Glen Arvin Country Club and Country Oats Golf Course. One of our most recent additions that we are so excited about is the ranges at Oakfield Thomas County’s new sporting center that consists of a 25-yard pistol range, a 100 yard rifle range, two skeet and trap fields, and a five stand clay range. 

We also have a very active YMCA which runs all of the sports programs and community events for the entire county including senior citizens and special events. They have three facilities which feature state-of-the-art equipment, indoor and outdoor aquatics (one of which is an aquatic park), a gymnastics center, a gaming activity room, child care, and more. Recently, Thomasville gained Thomasville Tomahawk where participants can enjoy a little family-friendly game of axe throwing. 

For the arts, we also have the Thomasville Center for the Arts which serves as the creative hub for the arts in Thomasville so that both youth and adults can experience the arts across the community. In addition to exhibitions and performances, they present after school visual dance music drama and design thinking classes to over 300 students daily.

Great Location

You are close enough here to enjoy a day trip on the forgotten coast in Florida and be back home in time to enjoy freshly caught seafood for dinner. If you enjoy boating, there are several lakes and rivers in our region that are close by. Wild Adventures theme water and animal park is located close by in Valdosta and they offer affordable year-round passes so your family can enjoy it throughout the year.

Additionally, Tallahassee Florida’s capital is only about a 30-minute drive and offers even more opportunities for enjoyment with restaurants shopping and, of course, Florida State University.

Climate

Generally, we enjoy comfortable weather all year long in Thomasville. The summers are long and hot, the winters are short and mild, and our average rainfall is about 55 inches a year. Over the course of the year, the temperature typically varies from 43 degrees to 91 degrees fahrenheit but is rarely below 30 degrees fahrenheit or above 96 degrees fahrenheit. Our climate combined with our soils and our access to plenty of water is conducive to healthy living. This makes our weather perfect for year-round gardening or a quick trip to our local farmers market where we can enjoy fresh locally grown produce any time of the year.

Homes

One of the factors that makes Thomasville unique is our real estate. Here we have lots of green space whether or not you want to live in the city or the county we have plenty of room for you to stretch out with our beautiful homes and oversized yards. We are not stacked on top of each other, no high-rises here. You can sit out under the stars and enjoy a beautiful campfire with friends and family or get out and enjoy long rides on one of the many canopy dirt roads that we have available.

We have many neighborhoods from which you can choose from town homes and single family homes in subdivisions to rural properties with land. Thomasville’s home prices are well below the national average here.

Community

Thomasville is truly priceless and unique, it’s a retreat from the density of big cities and congested traffic. It’s a place where people can breathe fresh air and in Thomasville our people are friendly. We still wave to each other at stop signs and say “thank you”, “have a great day”, and “god bless you”. We personally know our doctors, our teachers, even our business owners. It’s really a great town to walk around downtown and bike around. It’s easy to get anywhere in town and when there’s a need our residents can’t wait to rally around that person and truly work together in meeting those needs.

I’ve lived here my whole life and I am so proud of our little town. As you can see, Thomasville, Georgia offers a unique quality of life that is hard to find anywhere else.
